Get compensated the next time you’re stuck due to flight cancellations or delays.

Delayed? Lost luggage? There’s a way to bypass the airline’s customer service line.

You’ve probably heard about airlines shelling out serious cash for the delays, canceled flights, and lost bags that we’ve all come to know all too well. But how does the money get from the airline’s wallet to the aggrieved traveler’s? How do you even get in on the compensation? AirHelp, a New York-based tech startup helping passengers answer these questions, just received a major influx of funding—and that’s good news for frustrated fliers (and their wallets).

What Is AirHelp?

AirHelp is an app that automatically tracks flights for delays, cancellations, and any other unforeseen circumstances that could mean compensation for passengers. Rather than sending customers to a never-ending legal document or a customer service phone number that gives you smooth jazz and automated options instead of a human being, the company does all the work necessary to file and win a claim on your behalf.

How Does It Work?

With the click of a button (on desktop or mobile) you can sync your past travel reservations from Gmail, TripIt, Yahoo, or Outlook with AirHelp’s system, which will automatically search three years of travel history for any flight that was entitled to compensation. If you’re due some money, the company will help file the claim and when they win, they’ll automatically wire you the money, minus their 25 percent cut. If you’d prefer not to sync all your past travel and want to input your history manually by flight number and date, you can opt to do that, but it will take longer. Currently the app only works for travelers in the United States and the E.U., but the company is looking to add more regions in the future.

But Wait, There’s More

The company just raised 12 million dollars in Series A funding from a variety of top investment firms, which should mean increased resources, technology, and automation in assisting passengers. To date, AirHelp has helped more than 900,000 passengers receive north of 85 million dollars in compensation, so the extra cash should allow them to expand their reach and speed up their processes.
