The legend of Sun Moon Lake

While the legend of deer hunting is told by many tribes, there is another legend that is also widely told: the mysterious story named the Sun Moon Lake.

One day, the Thao tribe heard a loud bang at twilight after a hard-working day. The sun had set the other side of the mountain range; they expected the moon to appear as usual. However, that night, the moon did not appear, the whole sky and earth were in darkness. A young couple decided to look for the sun and the moon. After a long and hard trip, they arrived at Sun Moon Lake. There, they saw two dragons playing with the sun and the moon. Then they saw smoke rising from under a rock. They moved the rock and followed a small path leading to the place of an old woman; the old woman said that the dragons kept her here to cook for them. After hearing her story, the couple wanted to help the old woman but they were afraid that they could not defeat the dragons. The old woman revealed how to defeat the dragons: throwing an ax and dragging gold from Ali Mountain into the lake to kill them. They went to the Ali Mountain, found the ax, dragged and threw it into the lake to regain the sun and the moon. After killing the dragons, they do not have the power to bring the sun and the moon back to the sky. The old woman revealed the power of the dragon’s eye. They ate the eyeballs of the two dragons, turned into giants, and then they brought the moon and the sun back to the sky.
