Anyone who travels to Thailand loves to visit Bangkok – famous for its magnificent shopping malls and delicious street food. But have you ever wanted to try something different – a trip that is a bit “dusty”, a bit historical, and has some really chill corners.

Kanchanaburi Highlights Day Tour from Bangkok by AK Travel
Me! So we chose the 1 day tour to Kanchanaburi – a package following famous Vietnamese KOLs/KOCs – on Klook. Just get on the bus from Bangkok, the tour guide will take care of everything else. And as I expected, it was a day full of surprises: from the giant tamarind tree, the legendary River Kwai Bridge to a cafe in the middle of a lovely rice field.
Kanchanaburi day tour from Bangkok: Morning – Departure from Bangkok

Early in the morning, the car picked me up right at the meeting point in the center of Bangkok. Very punctual, the tour guide greeted me very friendly, checked the list quickly and then gave out information papers to the whole group. The atmosphere on the car was quite pleasant, the seats were comfortable, and there was cool air conditioning – rest assured that we wouldn’t be tired (although the distance between destinations was quite long).

While the car was speeding away from Bangkok, the tour guide briefly introduced the day’s itinerary: the Death Railway, the River Kwai Bridge, the ancient city of Kanchanaburi and even chill spots like Meena Café. I took a nap because I knew for sure that we would have to walk a lot in the afternoon.
11:00 – Lunch at The Village Farm To Café

After a long journey from Bangkok, the group stopped at The Village Farm To Café – a cafe located in a cool green space. The shop was designed like a greenhouse, with abundant light, and trees everywhere, so when I entered, I immediately felt comfortable.

Since the tour does not include meals, everyone can order whatever they like. I chose a cool cup of green tea latte with a piece of soft matcha roll cake – both delicious and beautiful in pictures. My friend ordered Thai-style rice and a salad, which was quite filling. Sitting and enjoying the food, breathing in the fresh air, I felt like I was recharged, ready for this afternoon’s journey with many historical attractions.
13:00 – Visiting Tham Krasae Wooden Bridge on the Death Railway

Kanchanaburi Highlights Day Tour from Bangkok by AK Travel
The first stop of the afternoon was Tham Krasae wooden bridge, a section of the Death Railway running close to the cliff. Walking on the old bridge, with the railway tracks below, and a river flowing slowly on one side – it felt both thrilling and overwhelming. The tour guide told me about the history of World War II, when this railway was built in extremely harsh conditions. After listening and looking around, I felt like the whole scene had a layer of meaning.
Legend of Krasae Death Railway Bridge

Krasae Death Railway Bridge is a wooden railway located close to a steep cliff, considered the most dangerous and difficult part to build of the entire Death Railway. Legend has it that during World War II, thousands of Allied prisoners of war and forced laborers had to work in harsh conditions: hot sun, wild mosquitoes, lack of food, lack of medicine. With just one mistake, they could slip and fall into the river or be crushed by the cliff.

Local people say that each piece of wood used to build this railway had to be exchanged for blood and life. Therefore, many tourists when walking on this bridge not only feel nervous but also carry in their hearts respect and regret for the people who died here.
13:25 – Experience the Old Death Railway Station
Right after that, we boarded the train at the old station on the Death Railway. The train slowly passed the railway tracks close to the edge of the mountain, the creaking sound of iron wheels touching the old rails. Sitting on the train, looking out at the green Thai countryside interspersed with winding rivers, I felt both peaceful and a little “chilled” when remembering the painful historical story associated with this route.

(*) There is no air conditioning on the train and the weather in Thailand is often uncomfortably hot. Prepare a hand-held fan to avoid heatstroke!
14:30 – Kanchanaburi Old Town
Kanchanaburi Old Town is the remains of the old citadel area – the land that used to be an important defense base from the Ayutthaya period to the early Rattanakosin period. When you arrive here, you will see the ancient brick gate, the remaining walls and ancient foundations.

The scenery here is quite quiet, mixed with a nostalgic atmosphere. I remember that day the gentle sunlight shone through the city gate, the shadows of the trees fell on the brick floor, listening to the tour guide tell the story of the city’s relocation in the 19th century to avoid invasion from Burma — it felt like stepping into a living history book.
15:20 – Bridge on the River Kwai

The Bridge on the River Kwai is Kanchanaburi’s most famous historical symbol. The current bridge is a new steel bridge, replacing the original wooden bridge that was destroyed in the war. Visitors can walk across the bridge, watch the river splash below, and feel the historical atmosphere surrounding it.

When stepping onto the bridge, I looked at the gentle flow of water, heard the creaking sound of metal at the foot of the bridge, and imagined the scene of the old prisoners of war going back and forth to build the bridge under the fierce pressure of war. The feeling of walking across this bridge – between history and the present – is hard to describe, both calm and more respectful of history.
Fun Fact: “The Bridge on the River Kwai”

Did you know? The movie The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) – which won 7 Oscars, including Best Picture – was inspired by the story of the construction of the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi.
However, there is one thing that few people know: in the movie, the bridge was blown up, but in real life, the River Kwai Bridge was not completely destroyed. In fact, the railway line has two bridges (one wooden, one steel), and the current steel bridge has been repaired many times after being bombed.

So when standing on the River Kwai Bridge or Krasae Death Railway, visitors not only touch a historical relic, but also feel like they are stepping into the setting of a legendary movie.
16:30 – The Super Impressive Giant Tamarind Tree
After the heavy historical points, we stopped at a lighter place – the giant tamarind tree (Monkey Pod Tree). You really have to see it with your own eyes to see its “hugeness”: the tree’s canopy spreads out like a giant umbrella, shading the entire land below.

Standing under the shade of the tree, looking up to see each branch intertwined like a giant green net, I feel both small and peaceful. This is truly the ideal place to sit, take a deep breath and enjoy the Thai countryside air.
17:20 – Chill at Meena Café & Live Virtually Unlimited

The last stop of the day is Meena Café – a cafe located in the middle of a rice field. The open space, wherever you sit, you can see the green stretching to the foot of the mountain. In the distance, the shadow of the pagoda still looms, creating a very peaceful picture. I chose a glass of cold Thai milk tea, drinking it while watching the sunset over the rice fields – truly chill. If the morning is a journey to learn about history, then Meena Café is the place to “close the curtain” gently, ending a perfect day.
At around 18:30, the whole group moved back to Bangkok. Ending the day tour to explore Kanchanaburi full of experiences.
A day in Kanchanaburi gave me a full range of emotions: excitement on the Death Railway, silence at the River Kwai Bridge, amazement at the giant tamarind tree and finally a leisurely cup of milk tea at Meena Café. All wrapped up in a reasonable schedule, not too rushed but not too redundant.

I found the day tour quite convenient: just book online in advance and there will be a shuttle bus to pick you up at your place, train tickets and insurance are included. The tour price is only from 1,800,000 VND/person (depending on the package & time) but I think it’s worth it because you don’t have to worry about transportation or finding your own way. The obvious advantages are that it’s easy, saves time, and has a tour guide; the only disadvantage is probably self-catering, so anyone who wants to experience local cuisine will have to prepare extra expenses.
