Actually, it only takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to Oia but due to the beautiful view, it took me more than 1 hour to get to Oia. Haha! We have to walk while taking a virtual live photo =)). Near the post office there are rows of white benches overlooking the sea. The ideal place for resting and… take pictures again.

On the way to meet these 2 uncles who are singing. At that time, there was a middle-aged tourist couple. His wife looks like very young, cheerful, dancing and singing, then she took the hat and asked for money to help these uncles :)).
Shopping, sightseeing in Fira
After a tiring 20-minute walk, I stopped at an ice cream parlor in the heart of Fira. The yogurt ice cream in Santorini is so delicious, you definitely must-try it when you come here.
After finishing the cool ice cream cone, I have enough energy to go shopping and walking again. For those of you who love maxi dresses like me, Santorini is probably the paradise. The shops here sell a variety of simple, matchless white maxi dresses that are extremely beautiful. I was like getting lost in the way to every store so I could not get out.
In addition, in Fira there are many stores selling Bohemian, Greek warrior sandals… will match with maxi dresses. The price is not cheap, but very nice.
For those who like to ride the Santorini cable car, right in the middle of Fira market you will see the cable car station with many people lining up. After seeing the people lined up like this, I pityingly turned on my heels =)))
MONEY EXCHANGE IN SANTORINI: If you want to exchange money in Santorini, you can exchange it in Fira village at the place shown below. The exchange rate is quite good, not as high as in Paris or Amsterdam, but much better than in Venice or Rome. The owner is very funny and hospitable. When he know that Di came from Malaysia, where he lived a few years ago, the owner happily chatted, and then he gave a free gift voucher. He even took us to the next store to receive free souvenirs (without having to buy anything). He also guide to us what to eat, where, what to play …
Tip: In the half of the hiking trail, near the blue roof church, there is a post office. You can buy postcards and stamps at nearby stores (3 cents/stamp) to send postcards to your friends. I sent a series to my friends in Manila and Penang. But only my friend in Penang received a postcard after more than a month. As for Manila, it has not been received for more than 3 months.
Watching the sunset in Oia, Santorini
At around 2pm I walked back from Fira to Imerovigli to check-in Airbnb. Resting, take shower and sitting to enjoy the view from Airbnb until around 5 pm I take the bus to Oia village (15–20 minutes).
During my trip, the sunset in Santorini starts from 7:45 PM until about 8:30 PM. You can check the sunset time of Santorini on google in advance to determine the appropriate time.
As I said at the top of the blog, Oia is a best place to watch the sunset and is also extremely crowded. Tourists often find the best place to watch the sunset before and sitting there for several hours. So you should spend the time to get the best view of the sunset.
The best places to watch the sunset in Oia are: Oia Castle, Kastro restaurant, The Donkey Steps.
Because Oia Castle is the most beautiful spot, you need to go there to sit around 3 hours before sunset. By the time I arrived at Oia it was around 6 o’clock, this place was already crowded with tourists. =. =
Kastro restaurant – The restaurant with the most beautiful sunset view in Oia. However, you must reserve a reservation in advance. Or you can stand at the top of the restaurant like the visitors in this picture below.
The Donkey’s steps is also an ideal place to watch the Santorini sunset. However, you should stand on the upper steps, close to the Kastro restaurant for the best view. This is also the place where I stood to watching the sunset in Santorini.
Honestly, when I arrived in Santorini, I was still skeptical about the beauty of the sunset here. Since the sun is only one, sunset maybe the same at wherever, why do you have to “fever” with the sunset in Santorini ?!
However, after watching the sun in Santorini through my own eyes, I had to say in amazement: Magical !!!!
The beauty of the sunset in Santorini is hard to describe. And no camera can fully capture its magical beauty. The golden sun slowly descended to the far horizon. The colors range from bright red, to orange-yellow, then orange-pink and all kinds of blended colors. In the distance are sails, slowly hidden in the sea.
You should see it with your own eyes to see the beauty of the sunset here. When the sunset come to an end, thousands of people standing there shouted regretfully and ended with applause from everyone. No one told anyone, clapping their hands and cheering!
There is an interesting that while watching the sunset, a group of donkeys came up from the old port. Mixed with footsteps sound, the delightful “wow” of tourists are the tinkling bells on the necks of each donkey. Really interesting :))
FYI: Donkey is the main means of transporting luggage in Santorini due to its steep mountainous terrain.
Around 9:00 pm, after watching the sunset, I take the bus again back to Imerovigli to have dinner at a restaurant near Airbnb. At this time, it was windy and colder than at sunset. As I have shared, Imerovigli is the village with the highest rated fine dining restaurants in Santorini.
Early the next morning, the two of us got up early to lie down to watch beautiful Santorini from the Airbnb apartment.
The view was so beautiful and really just wanted to lie down and relax for the days traveling to Europe, so I spent the whole morning at Airbnb lying in the sun, admiring the scenery and sipping wine.
For those of you who want to take advantage of your precious time, I recommend you taking a bus or renting a car to get to Red Beach and Perissa Beach (also known as Black beach).
Hopefully this article will help you easily prepare for your self-sufficient Santorini travel itinerary on a budget for 2 days without being too expensive.
Having fun!
