The story of the water temples in Bali
Water is very important to the Balinese people. So, they call their Hindu belief is Gama Tirta, which means the belief system of water. The Balinese are very concerned about the problem of their irrigation system because it affects their agriculture, irrigation and cultivation. For each main source of water for a given area, there will be a pura tirta (water temple) was built up.
Pura Ulun Danu Batur (on Lake Batur) is the leading temple in the above system. This temple is an important centerpiece for both practical and spiritual reasons. Rainfall falls into Lake Batur and minerals from there provide for the island’s entire ecosystem. Hence it becomes the most important water temple. The statue of Buddha is also kept in this temple. This temple is also known as the Bali temple on the lake because it appears to float when the Bratan lake rising.
Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple is located in a beautiful location, right on the banks of the crater – the lake. Lake Bratan is called the Holy Mountain Lake due to the fertility of this area. Located 1200m above sea level, it has a cold tropical climate. This is one of the most enchanting temples in Bali. There is a park surrounding the temple, with statues and flowers. The temple was built over the water to create a very beautiful landscape.
