24 hours in Penang — High noon: Visit Kek Lok Si temple and have lunch
After taking a short break, take some time to visit some places before the hunger strikes. Rent a motorbike to Air Itam to visit Kek Lok Si temple, one of the largest and most famous temples in Malaysia. Located on a high hill considered to have both geographical and spiritual significance, the temple was built in 1893 by a devout Chinese immigrant.
Kek Lok Si is really a very large complex of towering temples, many monasteries and beautiful gardens. The main attraction of the temple is a seven-story stupa of Rama VI with strikingly gold peak. The temple is home to 10.000 gypsum and bronze statues of Buddha. The recently displayed 30.2 m bronze statue of the goddess Mercy is another highlight. Especially, when you go to the top of the temple, you will see the beautiful panoramic of Penang.

Air Itam is not only known for Kek Lok Si temple but also famous for Assam Laksa, which is on the list of must eat foods in Penang. Laksa is a Malaysian specialty that everyone knows, and Assam Laksa you’ve heard of? It is laksa cooked with fish.
From afar you have smelled the bold fish of this dish. At first glance, it does not look very eye-catching, like a squeeze of noodles swimming in a dark brown sauce, some pieces of fish and vegetables. But do not let its appearance fool you, Assam laksa is very delicious and tasty dish. That is why the Assam laksa stalls full of people waiting in line for their turn.
If you arrive after 1:30AM, the chance to having a seat will be higher. The most crowded and most famous eatery is Pasar Air Itam Assam Laksa. Luckily, there is a dessert stall nearby to alleviate the spicy and hot taste of Assam laksa.
