Most importantly, the vegetables here “DO NOT NEED TO PAY MONEY!”
Because the fruit is too expensive, they decided to sanctify this road into a fruit garden
The Urban Food Street is located in Buderim on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland; and it was started at 2009.
At that time, an orange was sold in the market with the cost from 1.5 dollars to 2 dollars, and this price made the residents felt uncomfortable, so Mr. Duncan McNaught and Ms.Caroline Kemp who lived here and decided to grow their own food.
Initially, they just wanted to plant some orange trees in the garden for their own desiderate, but then they thought and decided to grow on both sides of the road, so everyone could pick to eat.
And the next day, they immediately planted trees on the two sides.
This idea also attracted others enthusiastic people, and next times, more and more people participated in this work, turning this road into a vegetable garden.
Gradually, the number of vegetables which are grown on both sides of the road more and more, the original road was only orange trees, now it has been expanded into a large farm with 11 branches of a road with many kinds of vegetables.
There are many fruits, vegetables such as bananas, lavender, pomegranate, dragon fruit, strawberry, tomato, kale, kale, lettuce, sweet potato, cabbage, peppermint; you can find everything you want.
One of the first two promoters, Duncan McNaughty, said: “The problem people are facing when cooking is lacked spice immediately, but it’s dark and if you drive to buy them, it is so inconvenient. Now, no need to do this, we can go out, and pick something we need.”
“So you needn’t drive to the market, reduce pollution, and you can walk to exercise also, one arrow hit two targets. ”
In addition, even if you do not want to grow by yourself, you can still use the vegetables on the road for free.
“Those who do not plant trees will provide irrigation systems or share fruit jam with people,” said Caroline Kemp. “There are even people who do not live in this area; you come here to join in the joy of cultivation
“Everybody has a different way of dedication.”
“Our common thought is to join hands and share!”
“Everybody comes to work together, and then everyone shares the labor result of them.”
In 2015, this vegetable village harvested a total of 900 kg of bananas and 300 cabbages.
The relationship of people harmonious thanks to this vegetable road
In addition to being able to eat fresh vegetables for free, the most important effect of this road is making people more united and harmonious.
Mrs. Caroline Kemp said, “Every afternoon, children in the area are going out playing on the street, playing football, playing games. Everyone will bring the basket to pick vegetables and fruits. ”
“People are not the only wave their hands when they met on the street like they used to; now, they will stop for talking, they also choose dates to meet, the relationship between neighbors is closer also“.
“This feeling look like everyone is a relative.”
Bring design idea which closes to nature to the city
The architect, Caroline Kemp, said: “The growing city brings us great benefits but at the same time it increases our frustration, for example, we gradually have separated with nature.”
“But if you are standing on our vegetable road, people just go out and get senses of nature, full of green feeling, fragrant fruit, the scenery is even more beautiful than the park. It’s also useful.”
“In addition, the climate in this area is quite hot; the trees provide plenty of shade for this place and provide more utilities for people to exercise.”
“We hope that through this way to change the design of the city before, to create a friendly environment, to protect the environment as well as a healthy lifestyle.”
This road with full of vegetables and fruits has solved our worries, such as safe food, polluted cities, neighbors relationship, healthy living.
So we can also understand the reason why so many people want to come to this area. Even the people here after selling the house also have to write in the leaflet that Urban Food Street is a great place. A website which is introduced this town had 2 million visits, all of whom commented that they wanted to come here.
Today, residents of this neighborhood are relying on the idea of a vegetable road to design a new category to help people in other places make street improvements, create a self-contained neighborhood. Self-sufficiency, food sharing, good health, and harmony
